The entire side river off Sandiaoling Trail is full of plastic. I’ve never seen a river so polluted. We hiked up about 800 meters through the river (which I now regret doing, now that I know the pollution was a lot more serious and toxic than I had previously thought) and saw several tons of trash along the way… That was the last ⅓ of the river. It goes up for another 1500 meters.
Most of the visible garbage appears to be some kind of thick plastic membrane, and other hikers have confirmed that it’s been there since at least Summer 2017. Many people think that it is spilling out of the 瑞芳中坑垃圾掩埋場 landfill at the top of the mountain. There are no roads or other access points to the river anywhere else, so that seems like a likely source.
It’s very important that the correct source of pollution is identified, because if we don’t have the right source, then we can’t stop it from happening again in the future. So thanks everyone who commented on my old video and corrected me.
Yesterday we took a bag out of the river and up to the landfill to see if they could identify it, but there is a big gate there, we were unable to get in.
Again I hope that you will share this video with the hopes that if the right people see it, something will be done about this river. But I no longer recommend anyone going there themselves until we know what the pollution is, and how toxic it might be.
It’s a heartbreaking experience to be in that river. I don’t think I can bring myself to go back, and I won’t be tracing anywhere downstream of this river until this problem is resolved. It’s a real shame, but I don’t know what else to do. Hopefully you can be more effective than I was.
